Frequently asked  questions (FAQs)

Who is it for?
The FiddleClinic is aimed primarily at intermediate to advanced players who have a repertoire of tunes and who are able to identity an issue with their playing – it’s not necessarily about learning how to do something for the first time. So, if you’ve been trying to play rolls for ages but know there is something missing then YES, the fiddle clinic is for you. Beginner fiddlers seeking help with mastering a specific issue or with more general questions might also find a FiddleClinic session of value.

What is involved?
This is NOT a regular fiddle lesson, so you will not necessarily learn a tune (unless trying to figure out a particular tune is where you are actually stuck). Instead, you should decide before attending the clinic what you would like help with (for example, it might be with your bowing in general, or in a particular phrase; it might be with a technique such as a 3rd finger roll; or you might just want a fresh perspective on your fiddle playing overall).

How often do I need to attend?
The FiddleClinic sessions are one-off 30 minute slots; the intention is that an issue is identified at the start of the session and an agreement made on what to tackle; this then is pursued for the duration of the session. For many fiddle players a single session might be sufficient. Others might value this type of support on a more regular basis – perhaps once a month. However, it is important to note that this is NOT a regular fiddle class – so normal fiddle class activity, such as learning tunes, will NOT happen (unless, of course, struggling with learning a particular tune is the issue you would like to present).

How is FiddleClinic Online delivered?
The FiddleClinic offers 30 minute sessions one-to-one and online using appear.in (Google Chrome browser required) as the preferred method or Skype as a backup. We recommend that you test your system both for appear.in and Skype before your session. All that is required is a dependable internet connection with a microphone and webcam. You will receive an email prior to your lesson with a login link for appear.in. If we need to use Skype my Skype name is Fiddle Clinic (location, Buncrana)

What happens if I book a FiddleClinic session but closer to the time I find I cannot make it?
Please let me know as soon as possible when cancelling your FiddleClinic session.
48-hours notice is required in order to guarantee an alternative booking.
A maximum of 3 reschedules only are permitted.
For cancellations within 24hours, we have a no-refund policy.

What timezone is FiddleClinic delivered in?
All times are in GMT

Can I book a one-hour session?
It is advised that students book a 30-minute slot initially. In that session discussion can happen about any further supports needed – and if we decide that a longer slot would be beneficial then that can be organised on a case-by-case basis.

What if the times available on the calendar don’t suit me?
The times on the calendar are the designated FiddleClinic times. However, should you have any specific time requests, please contact us by email – we will do our best to accommodate you.

What happens if there is a problem with the internet connection?
It is important that you test your system for both Appear.in and Skype before your session.
